Doom 3 BFG Edition Supports “Head Mounted Displays”

Hours of new content, enhanced graphics, and… support for head-mounted displays?

The 2004 horror smash hit Doom 3 is making a comeback and is reported to be better than ever. Coming to the PC, Xbox360, and PS3 this fall, Doom 3 BFG Edition will featuring hours of new content, including a brand new seven-level solo section called “The Lost Mission.”

Not only will this title feature an extended version of Doom 3 and the Resurrection Evil add-on pack, both with “greatly enhanced graphics,” the BFG Edition will include copies of both Doom 1 and Doom 2.

That alone should be more than enough to sell even the most casual Doom fan on this re-release, but there is much more.

John Carmack, Technical Director at id Software had this to say:

“DOOM 3 was enthusiastically embraced by gamers worldwide at its release. Today, the full experience has been enhanced and extended to be better than ever, and is delivered across all the platforms with a silky smooth frame rate and highly responsive controls. New support for 3D TVs, monitors, and head mounted displays also allows players to experience the game with more depth than ever before. We think shooter fans everywhere will love it.”

Head mounted displays? What are we talking about here? Sunglasses with big screen projectors for lenses? Star Trek-like visors? TVs that strap to our heads?!

Oh yea… he also had this to say.

“DOOM 3 now features the new armor-mounted flashlight, allowing players to illuminate dark corners and blast enemies at the same time.”
