Atlus Extends Demon’s Souls Online Servers a Bit Longer

When something this amazing happens you don’t ask why. You just go with it and pray that it never ends.

After avoiding several server shut downs over the past two years, the Demon’s Souls online server were finally scheduled for to be shut down come the end of May. As the month slowly dwindled to a close, people the world over feverishly squeezed the last few drops of life out of one of the most unique and innovative multiplayer experiences in recent memory. It seemed as though we were finally about to say goodbye to a loved one and move on to greener pastures. Well, for reasons unknown Atlus has decided to forego the original shut down date and extend the online servers for “the foreseeable future.”

In an official statement, Atlus said:

“We’re incredibly excited to be able to announce that the Demon’s Souls online experience will persist for a while longer,” stated Tim Pivnicny, Vice President of Marketing and Sales.  “While it originally seemed as though it would be unfeasible for us to continue to sustain the servers, a number of developments have made it possible for us to continue to invest in and support our fans as they have continued to invest in and support us and Demon’s Souls.  For all the gamers who have yet to discover the game’s amazing online experience, we’re happy to say you can still log on and find out why Demon’s Souls is still regarded by many as one of the finest games of all time.”

I would whole-heatedly agree with that last statement. In fact, it may even be a gross understatement. This server extension is a gift from the heavens and if you have yet to try Demon’s Souls, take this as your sign to do so now. Atlus did not mention any new projected shut down date and actually expressed continued interest in keeping the servers online as long as there was sufficient activity and user interest.

As part of the PS3 Greatest Hits collection, $19.99 is an absolute steal. It should be against the law to not own this game by now because it is that good. Sorry Xbox 360 owners, but you’re going to have to sit this one out, but feel free to enjoy your Dark Souls in the meantime as that game is just as good!

If you have tried Demon’s Souls and find it to be too brutally difficult for your own taste, but still want to see what all the fuss is about, I am doing an entire game playthrough. So, feel free to settle in and watch yourself about 14 hours of one of the greatest games in the world.

I’ve posted part 1 below, but you can find the entire series here.
