Sony Officially Announces Playstation All Stars: Battle Royale

Rumours are true! Sony’s Smash Bros. clone is very real indeed.

A few months ago, much speculation was rife about Sony having plans to introduce a similar game to Nintendo’s highly popular Super Smash Bros. series, with many media outlets reporting that it was heavily rumoured to be in development.

Then, all went quiet. Until today, when Sony officially lifted the metaphorical curtain of destiny on Playstation All Stars: Battle Royale, a brand new IP that stars classic and contemporary Playstation characters battling it out for glory and awesomeness.

Judging from the first screenshots, the game screams Smash Bros. from every pore, but it should be pretty damn awesome to play as Playstation characters rather than Nintendo’s band of heroes. Characters confirmed so far for the game are Kratos, Sweet Tooth, Parappa the Rapper, Fat Princess, Colonel Radec and Sly Cooper.

Playstation All Stars: Battle Royale is being devolved by SuperBot Enterainment, and is said to contain ” a host of playable characters (including unannounced third-party entires), special attacks, themed stages, and mash up music.”

While the similarities to Super Smash Bros are pretty glaring, there are a few subtle differences. Instead of damaging your opponents with attacks, hitting them will charge your “AP” meter. Having a full AP meter gives you access to super moves that then can be used to kill opponents. Killing opponents nets you points and the most points win. Like Super Smash the levels are somewhat dynamic and will present players with hazards that can turn the tide of battle in a heartbeat. Items will drop into maps and can be used to drain your opponent’s AP. The controls are apparently almost identical to Super Smash Bros and while each character has different moves, the button inputs are the same for everyone.

In terms of characters yet to be announced, I’m gonna go out on a limb and predict we’ll see Ezio from Assassin’s Creed, Crash Bandicoot and Nathan Drake at some point.

There’s also trailery goodness! Rejoice in the awesomeness!

So yeah, Super Smash Bros., on the Playstation 3.

You can check out the first official screens of the game below as well.
