Prey 2 Is Alive, But Won’t Be Released For A While Yet

Human Head Studio’s sci-fi shooter needs work, according to Bethesda.

If you’ve been waiting since 2006 for a sequel to the well received shooter Prey, the news is good and bad. The good news is, it hasn’t been canned, as many have speculated. The bad news is, it currently doesn’t meet Bethesda’s quality standards, according to a PR statement, and won’t be released in 2012.

The statement reads:

Development of Prey 2 has not been cancelled but the game will not be released in 2012 as planned. The delay is due to the fact that game development has not progressed satisfactorily this past year, and the game does not currently meet our quality standards. Prey 2 has shown great promise and we regret disappointing our fans. We have made a substantial investment in game development to deliver the experience fans want. We are determined only to release the AAA game that fans rightfully expect, and are unwilling to compromise our quality standards to meet a release schedule.

According to developer Human Head Studios, Prey 2 will take place in an open world environment, a move away from the linear corridors of the original game. There’s been no word on whether Prey 2 will keep the head-spinning gravity puzzles from its predecessor, but a fancy cinematic trailer from last year hinted at the possible introduction of rocket boots.

Will Prey 2 will be worth the wait? Only time will tell. At least Bethesda is being upfront about not wanting to release the game in a rubbish state. The delay could also be to avoid a clash with Bethesda’s other project, Dishonoured, which is set for release later this year and has recently acquired its own swanky trailer. Which game are you looking forward to most? Let us know in the comments.
