There May Be No Next Generation

With the WiiU already announced and confirmed could Sony or Microsoft be preparing to bow out of the console race? The chief product officer of Gaikai, a cloud based gaming service, seems to think so.

So far, this week has been a whirlwind of next-generation speculation, most of it based around Sony. We heard, by way of MCV, that not only would there be a Playstation 4 and Xbox 720 but that they would both be revealed at E3 2012. Kaz Hirai, manager of Sony’s consumer electronics, was quick to dispel that rumor and only a few days later Nanea Reeves, CPO for Gaikai, commented offhandedly that “Not all of the current console makers will have one more generation. That will be the big news at E3”.

It’s important to note that Reeves isn’t really a credible source when it comes to an announcement of this caliber and there are a few oddities with his statement. It would be beyond the realm of insane for a game company to announce, at one of the biggest gaming conferences in the world, that they were resigning from the console race. I can’t begin to speculate what the implications of such an announcement would be other than; they would be earth-shattering.
