So, That Final Fantasy VII Remake…Where Is It?

So, That Final Fantasy VII Remake…Where Is It?

Are your walls adorned with pictures of Tifa? Do you own a highly realistic buster sword replica? Do you wait patiently for the time when Square Enix will finally remake Final Fantasy VII? If so, you may be waiting a while yet.

Speaking to OXM magazine, Final Fantasy producer Yoshinori Kitase (currently working on Final Fantasy XIII-2) outlined that he would be reluctant to touch the series as he fears backlash from hardcore fans, particularly if the development team were tempted to change aspects of the game instead of making an exact HD remake of everything in Final Fantasy VII. He had the following to say:

If I may speak as a game creator, if we were to produce a remake of VII, for example, I would be really tempted to delete things and add new elements, new systems or whatever because if we were to make exactly the same thing now, it’d be like a repeat.

It’d be an issue of repetition and not as much fun to make such a game. So I’d be really interested in rearranging games or reshaping games into something slightly different even though it’s supposed to be the same game. But if we did that, the fans might be disappointed or ‘this is not what I was expecting’ so in that sense maybe some might say that it’s better to let memory be memory.

When we play the games we made years ago, sometimes we think ‘oh, that is not really cool’ or ‘that probably should have been a bit better than that’ and that sort of thing,” he went on.

But on the other hand, those slightly negative features and bits, for some of the really enthusiastic fans of these titles, that gives the game extra flavour or personality or whatever. So maybe they would rather we didn’t do anything about it and we just leave it in as it is. It’s very difficult to decide what we should we keep in and what we should take out.

Have to say, the man’s probably right. I’ve always feared Final Fantasy VII being remade simply because they might change too much of it and it may lose the magic; that’s not to say I wouldn’t love to see one my favourite games of all time redone in shiny HD though. It certainly is a bit of a pickle, but personally I wish they’d just take the risk so they can shut up those who’ve been asking for the game for years on end.

‘Will Do Mr Barret!’

Let’s face it – the game would still sell a bomb. Final Fantasy VII fans are in serious abundance around the globe and have been sadly neglected. We’ve been teased with Advent Children, we’ve shot things in Dirge of Cerberus and now we’re just about ready to save the planet from Sephiroth, in fully orchestrated sound and glorious HD. Let us not forget the almighty tease that Square released in 2005 as well, when they fully re-created the opening sequence of FFVII using the PS3 as a tech demo.  I wasn’t pleased that that isn’t a full game, I can tell you.

The important thing to remember here is that Kitase is not ruling out the possibility of the remake – he’s merely stating it would be a drag to do unless he could change everything, which could in turn annoy the hell out of the established fan base.

More importantly though, would you want them to change anything about Final Fantasy VII? Perhaps a more dynamic battle system? Perhaps a bigger world to explore with new summons and exciting new sidequests? Yeah, that sounds alright to me, but what do you think? Tell us below in the comments.
