PS3 Firmware 4.00 is Live – Introduces Vita Integration

Every firmware update since the bricking debacle known as 2.40 has sent a cold chill running down my spine, but the next time you power on your PS3 you will be greeted with a friendlier, more social PS3 firmware update.

It seems that Sony is leaving the boring old 3.00s behind and upgrading to the classier, sexier, 4.00 firmware in an effort to pave the way for the upcoming PS Vita.  For as exciting as the shift to a brand new number is, the update itself is relatively lackluster, at least for the time being – save for the implied integration of the new Transfarring feature. So don’t expect anything drastic to happen to your system. That is, unless you decide to power down during the update. That’ll throw some excitement into your night.

PS3 Firmware 4.00 mainly introduces features exclusive to Vita integration:

  • Receive messages sent using the Group Messaging featre of the PS Vita system
  • Share content from PS3 and PS Vita systems
  • Back up various types of files saved on a PS Vita system
