A Big Mountain to Climb: The Animation Behind Skyrim

As a tantamount to an already absurd amount of anticipation, the team behind Skyrim has released one final video showcasing the intricate animations created for the game.

The Elder Scrolls  series is no stranger to criticism when it comes to character animations. So in an attempt to ward off similar accusations with Skyrim the team spent a staggering amount of time creating each and every animation from scratch, often using their own bodies and movements as a model.

In order to achieve the desired result, the team created an entirely new animation system which allowed them to do basically anything they wanted. From there, the sky was literally the limit. Plenty of people may have their hesitations about Bethesda’s ability to produce accurate, believable character animations after the recent Fallout: New Vegas. Well, rest easy knowing that the animation team has admitted that there is a rather significant jump in animation quality from New Vegas to Skyrim which can be see in the video below.
