So What Happened to Sonic 4: Episode 2?

You remember Sonic 4 right? Sure you do; it was meant to be that episodic revival of Sonic’s fortunes, but so far we’ve only seen just the one episode, with absolutely no information on when we might see another. However, there’s still hope for another game, with a Sega representative recently stating he’d like to get Episode 2 out by 2012.

Speaking to Eurogamer, Sonic Team’s Head Honcho Takashi Iizuka had the following to say: ““This year, 2011, is the anniversary, so we’re focusing on the celebration title, but moving forward to 2012, Sonic will still be going, so I’d hope to provide Episode 2 then.”

The plan, apparently, was always to wait on episode 2 of the franchise and focus entirely on Sonic Generations for Sonic’s 25 anniversary year. “It was always the plan,” said Iizuka. “We knew about the anniversary year, and Generations was planned way in advance. It was always our plan to release Episode 2 after Generations.”

Not sure if I’m buying it myself, Sonic 4 wasn’t as well received as Sega could of hoped, and I honestly hope they’re pouring every effort into making Episode 2 a whole lot better than the first episode was.

Iizuka was also quizzed about whether there would be an episode 3, to which he expressed some doubts. ““We can’t say if there’s going to be Episode 3 or not.” he said, and it’s hard to get closer to the point than that – Sega obviously doesn’t know whether they want to continue the Sonic 4 storyline beyond another game, presumably due to wondering how the second game will be received.

So what do you think MTians? Are you a Sonic 4 fan and can’t wait for the next installment? Are you a Sonic hater who can’t stand anything he’s in? Comment. Down there.
